Despite scientific advances, there is an acute need for sophisticated, socially-relevant, multi-disciplinary research in early childhood mental health. Research that builds our capacity to identify and intervene when very young children's mental health is at risk is urgently needed. The Penn State Child Study and Prevention Research Centers have been jointly funded by the NIMH to train pre- and post-doctoral fellows in Early Childhood Mental Health (ECMH) Integrative Research. The two-year training program provides skills in conceptualizing, designing, and executing research that meets the public mission, within topical research concentrations: neurocognitive-behavioral relations across domains of development, developmental analyses of families at risk, and mediators and moderators of the efficacy of empirically-supported interventions. Trainees gain experience conducting research in labs that involve the integration of basic and applied research and get hands-on training in grant-writing and collaborating across disciplines. The training program is directed by Pamela Cole (Child Study Center) and Mark Greenberg (Prevention Research Center) and its faculty includes Sandra Azar, Karen Bierman, Clancy Blair, Kristin Buss, Celene Domitrovich, Mark Feinberg, Scott Gest, Rick Gilmore, Ginger Moore, Keith Nelson, Rob Nix, Brian Rabian, Elizabeth Skowron, Cindy Stifter, Doug Teti, and Susan Woodhouse.
