Community Connections

Child Study Center research takes place in communities all over Pennsylvania! View the Pennsylvania counties where CSC research is happening.

Child Study Center faculty members connect to the community in many different ways. Several faculty work with school districts and communities in other counties throughout the state.

Presentations, classes, and workshops are just some of the ways we give back. Here’s a list of some of our latest community events:

May 2017

Dr. John R. Weisz, Director for Laboratory for Youth Mental Health, Harvard University; Professor, Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard University and Harvard Medical School, will present the Fourth Annual Central PA Workshop on Evidence-Based Mental Health Services on Friday, May 5, 2017, on the University Park campus. The subject of the training is "Modular Treatment of Youth Anxiety, Depression, and Conduct Problems: Transdiagnostic Intervention using MATCH and the Child STEPs Model."

May 2016

Dr. John E. Lochman, Director of the Center for Prevention of Youth Behavior Problems and Professor and Doddridge Saxon Chair in Clinical Psychology at the University of Alabama, presented the Third Annual Central PA Workshop on Evidence-Based Mental Health Services on Friday, May 13, 2016, on the University Park campus. The subject of the training was "The Coping Power Program for Aggressive Children: Intervention Framework, Outcomes, Adaptations and Dissemination."

May 2015

Dr. Esther Deblinger, Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, presented the Second Annual Central PA Workshop on Evidence-Based Mental Health Services on Friday, May 15, 2015, here at the University Park campus. Faculty and staff across numerous Colleges, graduate students, State College Area School District employees, and local mental health workers were among the attendees for the workshop focused on "Developing An Evidence Based Approach to Treating Childhood Trauma: A Personal and Professional Narrative."

December 2014

Dr. Suzy Scherf and her Laboratory of Developmental Neuroscience collaborated with the Discovery Space Museum of Central Pennsylvania to conduct a day-long camp for young girls about the science of the brain. Partially sponsored by AAUW (American Association of University Women), this camp was called Brain Works, and was designed to teach young women about STEM careers and brain science; State College, PA

Dr. Suzy Scherf and her Laboratory of Developmental Neuroscience worked with the Office of Science Outreach at Penn State to communicate science to an underserved group of 25 middle school students from the Bellefonte Area School District in an event called Think Outside the Beaker; State College, PA

Summer 2014

Dr. Suzy Scherf and her Laboratory of Developmental Neuroscience worked with the Office of Science Outreach at Penn State to help conduct a series of neuroscience workshops during the summer camp program Science-U. These interactive workshops helped children and adolescents learn about brain health, the visual system, and how neurons in the brain communicate; State College, PA

Herman and Dr. Wendy Reinke, University of Missouri, presented the First Annual Central PA Workshop on Evidence-Based Mental Health Services on Saturday, May 31, 2014, here at the University Park campus. Faculty and staff across numerous Colleges and fields, graduate students, State College Area School District employees, and mental health workers were among the attendees for the workshop focused on "Motivational Interviewing in Schools: Strategies for Engaging Parents, Teachers, and Students"
